Say What?

Some say potato, some say puhtato. You say Zuh..Zuhm..Zuhmatrikal, we say Zymetrical.

There are very few companies that deal with more customers who can not pronounce, or even spell the name of the company they are dealing with, than Zymetrical (Zuh-met-ric-kul– Say symmetrical, and turn the ‘S’ into a ‘Z’). Perhaps there is no other company with a more confusing, or ambiguous name than this, and perhaps this is for good reason.

Why? Because it defies the core founding principles of business and branding, and because it makes stupid business sense. Well, Zymetrical isn’t what you would call a traditional business, in the traditional sense of the word. One look at the crappy gifts we sell would get that notion right out of your head.

So what does “Zymetrical” mean anyway?

“It was an artsy fartsy type word that popped into my head and kinda stuck.”, says sole founder, Brian Moss, then 17, speaking of how he named this new unchartered dot-com endeavor.

Now 24 and some change (as of this post), with four full time employees striving for the same vision he came up with years ago, Brian looks in retrospect at the company, and the name a bit differently.

“If I had one inkling, or the slightest notion that this thing would actually work out, I reckon I would have put a bit more thought into the name. I never thought that 7 years later, I would be doing this, selling fake dog poop over the internet. It sorta just happened, but why fix it if it isn’t broke.”

In spite of these pronunciation barriers, we have built a company, which ships thousands of orders, big and small, to thousands of people, schools, marketing agencies, and other organizations each and every month. So is our success in spite of the weird company name, or can we attribute our success in part, to that weird name?

Sure, Prankco.com would have been easier to say or spell, but it wouldn’t be nearly as mysterious or interesting. It would be easy to simply say that Zymetrical means “discounted novelties” in Spanish, or something like that, but we would prefer to let our products, service, and people define us.
