Its a Groucho World
August 4th, 2006 @ 1:01 pm by zymetricThe small town of Gorham, Maine took a stab at the official groucho guinness world record this past Sunday, and so far (until it is verified that is), appear to have unoficially taken the title with 1,438 participants simultaneously wearing a pair of groucho marx glasses. But as we have seen in the past, to become the official title holders, verification from Guinness is imperative.

Not unlike past groucho attempts (there are typically 6-10 attempts each summer, some of which we have detailed), this event garnered alot of media attention, locally, and then nationally once it got picked up by the AP. Mainetoday.com has a really nice picture gallery, as well as a writeup on this weekends event.

We have gotten 3 more leads from schools & organizations looking to make an attempt at this record in the past couple of days alone – this should be a heated summer for those attempting to surpass their predecessors if our suppliers can well, supply us with enough glasses. Groucho would be rolling in his grave if he could see all of the people honoring his likeness in such a silly fashion. But it is all for a good cause, and it is all in good fun. As he once said “Why should I care about prosperity? What’s prosperity ever done for me?”

The Richmond Braves, a AAA minor team for the Atlanta Braves, have successfully entered the Guinness World Records, thus unseating Gorham Maine, for the most amount of people simultaneously wearing groucho glasses at the same time (2,513). See our previous groucho entries. The fact that we are only about an hour west of Richmond makes it even nicer. [...]
